Portulaca umbraticola

Plants annual or perennial; roots fibrous. Stem prostrate or suberect with upright branches, 5-20+ cm long. Stem and branches cylindrical, smooth, glabrous, red-tinged. Trichomes sparse at nodes and in inflorescence. Leaves alternate or irregularly arranged, subsessile, with single midvein and margin may be tinged red; leaf blade fleshy, obovate, spatulate or sometimes lanceolate, flattened, 10-35 mm x 2-15 mm, apex rounded to truncate. Inflorescence terminal cymose with a sessile cluster of 5-8 flowers subtended by 2-3(-5)-leaved involucre. Flowers atinomorphic, bisexual, perigynous, large, ca. 3 cm across, red, pink, white or yellow. Sepals 2, fused at base to form a short tube, partly adnate to ovary; lobes 7 mm x 5 mm, acute, green. Petals 5, united at base, 1.5-1.6 cm x 1.5 cm, spatulate, oblong-ovate or obovate, apex slightly retuse, mucronate. Stamens numerous (50+), inserted on rim of calyx tube, fused at base and adnate to petals; filaments red, filiform, unequal, 3-5 mm long; anthers small, yellow. Ovary ovoid, half adnate to calyx tube; style ca. 6 mm long; stigmas 4-7, linear, reclinate, hairy. Capsule obovoid or turbinate, 3-5 mm diameter with encircling, expanded, membranous wing 0.5-1 mm wide proximal to suture. Seeds blackish-grey, round, reniform or elongate, flattened, 0.5-1 mm.
